CCTVCalc

PoE Switch Calculator

Estimate total switch ports, PoE-capable ports, future-ready PoE budget, and per-port power needs for a CCTV or network installation.

PoE switch planning tool

PoE Switch Calculator

Size total switch ports, PoE-capable ports, and future-ready PoE budget for a camera or network installation.

IP cameras, PTZ cameras, access points, intercoms, or other PoE devices.

Only count these if they consume ports from the switch being sized.

Future spare PoE ports are assumed to use the same entered max power per device.

W

Use the actual manufacturer maximum PoE requirement when available.

%

User-selected planning margin, not a mandatory IEEE requirement.

Formula: total ports = current PoE devices + spare PoE ports + occupied non-PoE ports. Future-ready PoE budget includes current and spare PoE ports with selected headroom.

Recommended Planning Target

16 total ports

At least 10 PoE-capable ports and at least 96 W of PoE budget.

Minimum Per-Port Capability

IEEE 802.3af / Type 1

802.3af may be sufficient from a power perspective. Verify device class, switch support, cabling, and manufacturer requirements.

A total port recommendation does not guarantee every port is PoE-capable. Some unused ports may not provide PoE depending on switch design.

How to Size a PoE Switch

Size three separate requirements: total ports, PoE-capable ports, and PoE power budget. A switch must satisfy all three for the installation.

Total Ports vs PoE Ports

Not every port on every switch is necessarily PoE-enabled. A 16-port switch may have fewer than 16 PoE-capable ports.

PoE Budget vs Per-Port Power

Total PoE budget is the shared wattage pool. Per-port power is the maximum a single port can provide under the supported PoE standard and class.

Spare Ports for Future Cameras

Spare PoE ports make future expansion easier. This calculator assumes spare PoE ports may use the same maximum power per device.

PoE, PoE+ and PoE++

IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at, and 802.3bt represent different power tiers. Use the device and switch specifications rather than relying only on marketing labels.

Dedicated Uplink Ports

Only count uplink, NVR, router, or server connections when they consume ports from the switch port count being sized.

Example PoE Switch Calculation

Eight current PoE devices, two spare PoE ports, and one occupied network port require 11 total ports. A common 16-port switch size leaves 5 unused total ports, and the future-ready PoE budget is 96 W with 20% headroom.

FAQ

How many PoE ports do I need for 8 cameras?

At least 8 PoE-capable ports, plus any spare PoE ports you want for future devices. Other NVR, uplink, or router ports may also need total switch ports.

Should I use an 8-port or 16-port PoE switch?

It depends on total ports, spare ports, and PoE budget. Eight cameras plus two spare PoE ports and one occupied uplink-style port needs 11 total ports, so a common 16-port size fits better.

How much PoE power does my switch need?

Multiply PoE devices by each device's maximum power, include spare PoE ports if planning for them, then add your selected headroom.

Is total PoE budget the same as per-port power?

No. A switch can have enough total watts but still lack the per-port PoE standard needed by a high-power device.

Can a 16-port switch have fewer than 16 PoE ports?

Yes. Some switches have a mix of PoE and non-PoE ports, so verify the model's PoE-capable port count.

How many spare PoE ports should I leave?

There is no universal number. Use spare ports for likely future cameras or powered devices without treating a fixed percentage as mandatory.

Can PoE+ power a standard PoE camera?

Usually compatible lower-power devices can be powered by higher-capability ports, but negotiation, cabling, switch implementation, and device requirements still matter.
